MNSure Announce Special Enrollment Period for those facing tax penalty

In an effort to insure more people and lessen the tax consequences for some Minnesotans, MNSure has announced a special enrollment for those people that face a penalty for being uninsured in 2014, and would like to get coverage for 2015.  The Special Enrollment period dates run from March 1, 2015 through April 30, 2015.  Read here for more information on who qualifies and how to apply.

• This special enrollment does not eliminate any 2014 tax penalty responsibility you may have. It will help minimize 2015 tax penalties if you qualify and enroll in 2015 health insurance coverage.

• This special enrollment does not apply to those who already purchased 2015 coverage. If you are currently enrolled and have minimum essential coverage, you will not be able to switch plans under this special enrollment.

Special Enrollment Dates

If you qualify, you can select a plan and enroll starting March 1, 2015, through April 30, 2015. 

Who Qualifies

You can enroll during this special enrollment period if you meet all of the following:

• You did not have health insurance that qualifies as minimum essential coverage in one or more months during 2014;

• You owe a tax penalty for being uninsured in 2014;

• You are not enrolled in minimum essential coverage for 2015; and

• You were not aware of or did not understand the implications of not having health coverage until completing your 2014 tax return.

How to Apply for this Special Enrollment

• Follow the steps for applying for a special enrollment, starting with step 1

• In step 5, you will need to call the MNsure Contact Center and provide the necessary information to see if you qualify for this special enrollment.

  Coverage Effective Dates

• If you select a plan from March 1 through March 15, your coverage will begin April 1, 2015.

• If you select a plan from March 16 through April 15, coverage will begin May 1, 2015.

• If you select a plan from April 16 through to April 30, coverage will begin June 1, 2015.
